DIC Malaysia Shares Innovative Barrier and Recycling Solutions at Flexible Packaging Seminar Hosted by Rieckermann

On July 2, 2025, DIC participated as a partner speaker in the “Innovative Solutions for Sustainable Flexible Packaging” seminar hosted by Rieckermann at Le Méridien Petaling Jaya.

Utsab Choudhury, Regional Deputy Technical Director from DIC Graphics Thailand and Yuzuru Namiki, Packaging Development Manager from PT DIC Graphics Indonesia presented the company’s latest innovations in oxygen barrier technologies for flexible packaging, showcasing three key solutions:

  • Functional Coating Solutions on Film: Designed to enhance oxygen barrier performance across a wide range — from medium (<100 cc/m²/day OTR) for polyolefin-based structures replacing PET, to very high barrier (<1 cc/m²/day) using AlOx or MET-coated substrates. The solution also improves grease resistance for mono-material packaging used for greasy products.
  • Functional Coating Solutions on Paper: Water-based coatings developed to enhance grease and water resistance on paper substrates, compliant with FDA 176.170 and 176.180 standards.
  • High Solid Solvent based & Solvent free lamination: Eco-friendly lamination technologies that contribute to energy savings, which significantly reduce or eliminate solvent use during the lamination process.

These barrier technologies are designed for practical applications across packaging formats such as frozen food packaging, soap bar cartons, molded fiber cutlery, paper cups, vegetable bags, etc. DIC’s solutions are suitable for both paper and plastic-based formats.

The session also highlighted DIC’s contributions toward circular economy goals through de-inking and de-lamination solutions. These technologies play a key role in enabling the recovery and recycling of printed flexible packaging by allowing for easier separation of layers and removal of ink, improving the quality of recycled materials.

“Our participation in this seminar reflects more than just a technical contribution. This is part of our long-term commitment to support the industry’s transition toward sustainable packaging,” said Kenn Chan, Managing Director, Head of SBU IndoChina. “At DIC, we continuously engage in these industry platforms, share knowledge, and accelerate the adoption of solutions that reduce environmental impact while maintaining packaging functionality.”

With growing regulatory pressure and consumer demand for environmentally responsible packaging, DIC Malaysia strives to provide sustainable packaging solutions for converters and brand owners.
